Sheer Bliss August 9, 2008 I've just finished the first three books and was thoroughly spellbound by the story. My one slight regret is that the second and third books don't quite have the emotional depth of "Across the Nightingale Floor" which is one of the best books I've ever read.
I'm currently reading "Heavens Net Is Wide" which again beautifully conveys the spirit of Lord Otori Shigeru whose character is the heart and soul of the books.
Great books for older children AND adults August 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The first of these books was chosen as one of our book club reads and the other two I bought as soon as they came out in hardback. Truly wonderful storytelling, compelling and spellbinding. My own teenage children devoured them too after I'd finished with them. I now buy the set for god-children and nephews/nieces as presents but as they are quite explicitly gory and violent in parts I do aim to be age-appropriate. I haven't yet read the last two in the series (there are two more after this - the Harsh Cry of the Heron and Heaven's Net is Wide) but they are on my TBR pile for sure. I highly recommend these books just as much for adults as for older children.
SOO AMAZING! January 29, 2008 All four books including 'Harsh cry of the heron' are so amazingly written, they are by far the best books I have ever read. I have read other books after this and they seem bland compared to this series. Its soooo goood! I want her to write more lol =]
Escape to the past, a tale of Japanese Feudalism January 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lian Hearn's novels on the Otori clan captures your imagination and takes you away to a distant past. Tales of passion, love and treachery set in Japan's Feudal times with leave you wanting to know more.
should be 10 stars!! December 7, 2007 Lian hearn is such a breath of fresh air to literature. These books grip the reader from the very first page, urging you to find out what happens to Takeo and Keade...and now theres a sequal and prequal to read too...YES!!! Just started the sequal and managed only 7 chapters in my first 2 nights...its amazing and actually explains things and continues the story.
All 5 books feel as though you are reading history they are that real. It feels almost like memoirs or a biography at times and at others like an epic adventure. These books are a must for readers of love, war, sex, romance, adventure and fantasy and anyone with the remotest interest in oriental culture. BRILLIANT
